The Silence of Death

My best friend’s brother died today.
He reached out from the murky depths
Cupped her heart in his frigid palms
And sunk twenty feet down to rest there

It was a warm sunny Sunday morning
Abuzz with chatting shopping and gossiping
It was all shattered by one phone call;
She called to tell me her brother had drowned

The pond lay still while they looked for him
No sign of the deceptive eddies and whirls
That grabbed him by the knees and pulled him down
While he gasped and clawed for breath

I can hear her screams in my head still
My mind is whirling with formless thoughts
He walked out this morning saying he’ll be back
All that returned was his cold lifeless body
